Exceptional Project Management – Stakeholder Management

After more than 15 years of experience in implementing large-scale market transition and IT ventures, I find that the most critical element in ensuring efficient implementation is strong stakeholder management.

Ask yourself the following questions when it comes to your own idea. Why does my proposal impact diverse partners and stakeholder groups? Who are my greatest fans and allies, and who are working vigorously to hinder my delivery? Do my partners recognize the project’s benefits and their position in helping deliver those benefits?

  1. Understand your stakeholders-complete an inventory of stakeholders: Influential stakeholders can not be apparent at first, so it is crucial to use professional expertise to help you recognize the applicable stakeholders within and outside the enterprise.

Study project reports and interview team leaders and other primary players to help you create a detailed list of all the people and organizations who are impacted by the project and may influence it.

Although each project and organisation is special, identify any of the above as potential partners for the project; corporate line managers and workers affected by the implementation Other divisions who can offer or accept services affected by the project Support areas like Human Resources, Finance and IT Suppliers-Goods, Utilities, Applications . 1. Influences of stakeholders-complete an interaction matrix: score them for each stakeholder (or group), depending on how favorably or negatively they can affect the project.

Consider considerations like how the initiative may affect people and communities, personal events that can shape attitudes and the political climate within the related organisation and divisions.

I use a basic rating method to classify highly positive stakeholders, and those stakeholders that are substantially resistant.

Stakeholders will oppose projects, whether actively and unconsciously, for several factors including: Fear of change Past bad experiences Perceived lack of power Task reassignment or future instability Increased workload during project implementation Understanding how the project would affect specific stakeholders improves the capacity to convince and encourage them to endorse the delivery.

By recognizing the strongest allies and backers and engaging aggressively to hinder the execution, you will pursue more successful assistance as well as concentrate on and resolve future problems early in the development cycle of the initiative.

  1. Successful communicating successfully ensures that partners have a good picture of the meaning you are attempting to communicate, whether in written material, telephone conferences or presentations.

Hopefully, by now, you have defined all the relevant people who might affect your project and classified them by their degree of commitment and assistance. Do these people understand the project’s benefits and their position in helping get those benefits?

The next move is to ensure you are successfully working with and interacting with every stakeholder.

Although sounds disappointingly easy, this is where you will most influence on the progress of your project.
